Welcome to 1A!Hello! I am Miss Bennett, and I am so excited to be your first grade teacher this year! This year will be full of learning, growth, and positivity. I can't wait to meet everyone and am looking forward to a fun year together!

- We are a tree nut and peanut-free school, so please be mindful when bringing in snacks and lunches.
- Please only bring in ONE snack each day.
- Transportation changes must be made by sending in a note in your child's take home folder. Any last minute transportation changes that come up during the school day should be made by filling out the online transportation change form on the the school website or by calling the office.
- PLEASE MAKE SURE STUDENTS PUT THEIR NAME ON THEIR HOMEWORK:)

- Read the decodable book we send home in the beginning of the week each night to practice new trick words and sounds

We are Learning...ELA- Fundations Unit 7: In Unit 7, Fundations® introduces your child to additional glued sounds. Previously, the glued sounds of all, am, and an were taught. A glued sound is one in which letters have their own sounds but they are difficult to separate. The glued sounds that will be introduced are:
Week 1
ang – fang – /ang/ ing – ring – /ing/
ong – song – /ong/ ung – lung – /ung/Week 2
ank – bank – /ank/ ink – pink – /ink/
onk – honk – /onk/ unk – junk – /unk/A word such as sink with the glued sound of /ink/ will be tapped /s/ (one tap) /ink/ (one tap with three fingers glued together).

I shall be working with the /ng/ sounds first. You might want to have your child practice them with the keywords. Marching while saying “ang – fang – /ang/” in rhythm is fun!
I strongly encourage all students to work on the Unit 7 packet that was sent home at the beginning of the unit to reinforce what we are learning in class and to review before test. Flashcards for the trick words we are learning in each unit are also in the unit packets, so please cut them out are review them every night.We are also practicing tapping out words, identifying vowel sounds, and improving handwriting with correct letter formation. You can help at home by having your child:
Read and mark words with digraphs, bonus letters, and glued sounds in their weekly books.
Circle trick words
Practice spelling simple CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words and words with digraphs (like ship, bath, chop, duck, etc.), bonus letters (like puff, buss, off, fill, chill, Bess, etc.), and glued sounds (sing, bank, ball, ham, fan, etc.)
Say the sound each letter, digraph, or glued sound makes.
Math- Chapter 3 : Subtraction Strategies and Subtraction Facts to 12
Religion- Unit 2: God Sent His Son as Our Savior
Science- Focus: Polar Bears
Animal Superpowers: In this unit, students explore the traits of adult and baby animals! Students make observations of parent animals and their offspring, determining how they are similar and different. They explore behaviors that help offspring survive. Students also investigate how the traits of animals are essential for their growth and survival.
Social Studies- Groundhog Day -
Daily Homework
Homework should be completed and returned each day.
