ELA:
Your 5th grader is beginning our first class novel, Maniac Magee. They will learn how discussions with their peers will help them think criticaly and grow new ideas. They will continue to identify Note and Notice signposts while we read together and we will delve into the different themes of the story practicing higher level thinking strategies.
Homework continues to be reading each night for 15 minutes and creating a post-it to reflect on their reading. All books and post-its are required to be brought in each Friday! Please help remind your child to do so! Please note there are times passages or incomplete classwork is assigned in addition to the 15 minutes of reading.
Any students who are beginning new books, should check the guided reading level using Scholastic Book Wizard: click here. Remember, 5th grade levels typically range from "T-W".
For Epic's leveled library: click here.
Additionally, students are continuing through Writer's Workshop with their narrative writing piece. They are focusing on revising, self, and peer editing their work before publishing. The students are excited to share their work!
Science:
Our Tower Garden is thriving! We will be harvesting and enjoying a salad celebration on November 9th! Students have also been going out weekly to observe and record their observations of the garden and pond in our GOLC. Pictures are posted on Class Dojo.
Your 5th grader has also been immersed in mixture and solution investigations. Students are understanding how mixtures can be separated and how to work collaboratively to answer scientific questions. Students will end the Matter unit by learning more about solids, liquids, and gasses and the differences between physical and chemical properties. We will wrap up our Matter Unit this month!
