ELA:
Students have been reading 20 minutes each night and creating at least one post-it to reflect on their reading. Students have been digitizing their work into a class "Book Blab" to share their reading and reflections with their classmates. Students are also learning how to comment on each's work to promote collaboration and interest in different genres. Please ask your 5th grader about the Book Blab to ensure they are completing their homework. Thank you for your help with this!
Maniac Magee is coming to an end! Students are actively reading part 3 of this story and learning what will happen to our main character! Students have been challenging themselves with deeper level thinking and learning how to connect to the theme of the story.
Additionally, students have begun brainstorming ideas for their persuasive writing piece. Students are learning the important of valid reasons and how to narrow down the best idea for their topic. As always, students continue to work on proofreading and elaboration on a daily basis.
Lastly, students are working on an at home project this month: W.E.B. (Wonderfully Exciting Books) Book Share. All students have chosen their book and are actively reading to complete their chosen project. A checklist was provided to help students budget their time. The project and presentation will take place the week of February 22nd. Students will be assigned their day in the upcoming weeks.
Any students who are beginning new books, should check the guided reading level using Scholastic Book Wizard: click here. Remember, 5th grade levels typically range from "T-W".

Science:
Students are learning about our Earth and its structure. Ask your child how many layers Earth is composed of, and which is the hottest! This foundation has led to learning about the cause of earthquakes, volcanoes, and mountains. From here, students will be exposed to the different systems and cycles of Earth!
