Saturday Feb. 24, 3pm-9pm- Confirmation Retreat at SBS
All students receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation are required to attend. More info is found on the school/church website under Religious Education.
March
Tuesday, March 27, 1pm Living Stations presentation by our 8th graders. This is an opportunity for parents who cannot attend any of the other performances to experience our LIving Stations. If you are planning on coming to this performance, please let us know.
Wednesday, March 28 5pm and 7pm Living Stations presentations by our 8th graders
All students will remain after school for this event as we rehearse, set up, gather together for dinner and present our Living stations program at 5 (for RE) and at 7pm for parish. We will send home permission slips regarding this day later on in the year.

Confirmation... April 13 2pm at St. Benedict Church the 8th graders will be off this day but they must be at SBS by 1:30 pm. Confirmation gowns will be distributed in the cafeteria prior to the Confirmation.

Friday, May 4...this is our May Crowning Mass... 9 am.
This truly is a beautiful mass as our 8th-grade girls honor Mary and they form a court with the
'crowner'. This is a wonderful Mass to make if you can swing it. Students are required to dress appropriately for this Mass.

Friday. June 1...9am Mass honoring all of our 8th graders
The 8th graders wear their gowns for the event and process in and out of church.Their names are also individually announced by a first grader and they process out with a 1st grader. They will then have the Communion Breakfast and yearbook signing. It's a very nice morning! Many class parents are on hand as well to help out with the breakfast as well.

Students come to school dressed for the day. We will leave SBS at 9:15 and return at approximately 5:30 pm. Additional information and permission slips will be distributed later in the year.
Tue. June 5..Clap Out at end of day
This is a relatively new tradition as the 8th graders take their last walk in through the halls of SBS before
graduation. It takes place roughly from 1:30-1:45 and lasts 10-20 min. max. Parents are welcome to attend . Graduates wear graduation gowns.
Wed. June 6. at 6 pm.Baccalaureate Mass and Recognition Ceremony.
This year, the Recognition ceremony will be after the Baccalaureate Mass. Students arrive wearing graduation gowns at 5:30. Following the Mass and ceremony, we will gather in the cafeteria to enjoy the traditional Ice Cream Social and 8th grade video. All students are required to attend. Students do not have school this day.

Graduation begins at 5. Students must arrive at 4:30 wearing their cap and gown. Students do not have school this day.

Today we worked on the characterization for the novel. Students worked in groups to identify specific character traits - both direct and indirect. Please be sure that your children are reading. It is a significant disadvantage to them to come to class without any knowledge of the book. I will not be able to stop for students who do not read.HW for tonight is to read to page 60. Tomorrow's homework will be to read to page 80 and students will have to finish the book this weekend. On Monday, I will be moving forward with the content and skills.

I just found out that I DO have to report tomorrow for Jury Duty do the quiz will be delayed. If I am in on Wednesday, we will review the vocabulary exercises and the quiz will be on Thursday.

We will be starting our summer reading presentations for the students who are ready asap. Starting on Monday, I will be calling on 3-4 students per day to present. Remember to bring your To Kill a Mockingbird book to class every day.

Here are your summer reading instructions. Please do not email me your presentations until I ask you for them. We will be working on presenting during the first weeks of school,however, they are NOT due the minute we walk in the door. We will begin presentations next week , Sept. 11.
SUMMER READING INSTRUCTIONS
You will be reading two books for class this summer.
1. Book one is a non-fiction book. You may select any non- fiction book that interests you. Be sure to choose a book that makes you think – a book that you can react to in some way. When we come back to school, you will give an oral presentation about the book. You may create a power point presentation to use during your oral presentation. You can use notes and make the presentation without a power point as well. You can use a reader's journal to keep track of your reading . Starting on Sept. 7, be prepared to tell the class about the book you have read including, but not limited to, the following questions.
1. What interested you about this book?
2. What did you find surprising?
3. Why you chose this story?
4. Who are some of the main characters?
5. Can you relate to any of them?
6. To whom would you recommend this book and why?
2. The second book you are reading is To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Be prepared to participate in activities based on the book in September.
During the first trimester we will also read Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. You will be assigned specific days to read this book. You do not have to read this during the summer. You do not need to purchase this book.
Sometime in January or February, we will read, Night, by Elie Wiesel. You will receive specific days to read this book.
